Top 5 Pests this Winter: Home Pest Protection

No one's eager for household pests to find a way into the crawl spaces, basement, or attic of your house. I mean, who wants to have a rat under the tree, or a spider webbing up the menorah, or a roach scatter across the prayer rug, and let's not mention them getting involved in the food.

Shocker for you or not, common house pests during the winter are alive and kicking hard enough to make it inside and keep warm--who knew, right? That's why we've made your holiday hit list here for you and the best ways to prevent them from coming into your kitchens and bathroom and other effective control methods for you.

5 Most Common Pests in Rochester

1. Carpenter ants

Carpenter ants create a huge financial mess, almost as bad as hearing the words, "You've got a termite problem." Just like termites, carpenter ants make nests in your walls and chew away at the wooden beams and wall studs, but carpenter ants don't digest the wood like termites.

It's hard to get rid of these ants because they're tough, but the good news is that they're not as hard to eradicate as termites are. The hardest part is finding and destroying the queen and enough of the nest to render it pretty much impotent, so it's best to consult a pest control company for help.

2. Spiders

Not all spiders eat nothing but fruit flies; many spiders can bite and cause some damage. The black widow's venom is reportedly 15 times deadlier than rattlesnake venom, and brown recluse spider bites cause ulcerating sores with their necrotic venom.

Spiders wander their way inside during the autumn season and harbor in various hidden locations in the house, including attics, basements, storage areas, and crawl spaces. Always ensure you know where your hand is going, and always bring the dead spider's body to the hospital with you for identification if you're bitten.

3. Roaches

Now, of all the pests we deal with, cockroaches are probably one of the most infamous, especially as a super hardy household pest, but also as carriers of disease and notorious for being disgusting and creepy.

They don't need much food and water to live for an extremely long time. Cockroaches are capable of survival for ten days or up to three weeks without their heads, and only perish because of dehydration! This might be one reason they are found inside your Rochester home during the winter and snowy months.

4. Bed bugs

Bed bugs feed on human blood, their favorite food source, but luckily they can't spread diseases, unlike cockroaches and rodents. Still, their bites leave scarring, and they're generally a nightmare.

Bed bugs find their way just about anywhere because they attach their egg casings on just about anything or hide in clothing and are easily transported from a hotel or train to your home. Since they stay within 20 feet of a host, they benefit from your household heating system (Yeah, we don't like the idea of being a "host" either).

5. Mice and Rats

This pest isn't a big surprise as a winter domestic pest, being probably the most infamous winter pest of them all. They eat pet food and gnaw away at your walls and make noise at night and leave poop everywhere. Prevent rodents from becoming the worst roommates ever by following our household tips below.

3 Home Tips to Control Winter Pests

1. Seal off Entry Points

Use silicone caulking, copper mesh, and steel screening with 1/4 inch gauges. Block gaps around utility pipes, seal up the crevices around foundations and sill plates and seal up the cracks around doors and windows.

Make sure your basement-level windows have metal (not nylon) screening that's in good repair. Install and maintain weather stripping or door sweeps.

2. Reduce Nesting Places and other Attractions

Keep branches away from the siding and other house cracks, and store firewood at least 20 feet from the home. Seal all your food in airtight containers or the refrigerator to reduce their food sources, especially from rodents.

3. How to Act Now

Rodents respond well to snap traps, and mice especially enjoy exploring when you move their traps around, but don't move rat traps because rats are more suspicious and won't touch mobile traps.

For the bugs, mix water and dish soap and spray roaches or spiders with it. If you find a bunch of them (yes, too gross), then suck them all up with the vacuum cleaner, put the bag in a garbage sack, and freeze the whole thing overnight before throwing it away.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
