Fox Pest Control’s Rochester Opossum Removal Service

Have you seen an animal that looks like a cat-sized rodent in your yard? It’s a huge shock at first. Don’t worry; it’s not a giant rat. It’s probably just an opossum. You probably don’t want them by your house, though. Since they’re hard to get rid of by yourself, leave opossum removal  to the professionals. Fox Pest Control wants you to feel comfortable on your property.

Signs of an Opossum Problem

You might already know for sure that you have an opossums problem. But here are a couple of the most common signs of opossums problem in Rochester.

Noises

Opossums can screech, hiss, and even yowl. They also make plenty of noise when they make their nests, including scratching sounds, scurrying, and rustling.

Smells

If an opossum has made a home in your attic or crawl space, its accumulated urine and droppings are sure to create extremely unpleasant odors.

Sightings

Because opossums are nocturnal, almost as agile as cats, and not very aggressive, opossum sightings aren’t very common. But if you see one climbing or trundling around your property, chances are good that you might have an infestation.

Things You Need to Know About Opossums:

Opossums are fairly easy to identify. Look for these traits to pinpoint a possum:

  • They can grow to be as long as 40 inches.
  • They’re covered in white or gray hair.
  • A long pointy, face
  • Hairless ears
  • A long, hairless tail
  • Four feet with five toes each
  • A toe that looks like an opposable thumb on both the rear feet
  • Opossums are found in several different areas. You can see them in trees or around wet, swampy areas in the United States, Mexico and South America.
  • They eat: small rodents, insects, frogs, small lizards, birds, worms, vegetables, berries, nuts, fruit, pet food, and garbage
  • Luckily, opossums rarely cause harm. They’re more likely to play dead if they feel threatened. In fact, these large creatures have been known to be in a catatonic stupor for up to three hours. Still, you probably don’t want them messing around in your garden.

Helpful Opossum Prevention Tips:

  1. Clean up the yard of fallen fruit, berries, or other food.
  2. Close up garbage bins at night. Don’t leave any food or garbage  out at night, including pet food.
  3. Keep bushes well-trimmed, otherwise opossums will make a home there.

Opossum Control FAQ

Where do opossums live?

Opossums live throughout the United States, Mexico, and South America. They especially like to hang around in trees, sometimes upside down on their prehensile tail. Typically, they don’t mind exactly where they live, but they do enjoy living near wet, swampy areas where plenty of insects and small prey might live.

Are opossums dangerous?

These animals are very docile. They usually spend most of their time waddling around and looking for insects to eat. They would much rather play dead than attack.

Can opossums get rabies?

Not usually, no. Opossums have an unusually low body temperature that makes it difficult or impossible for rabies to stay alive.

What’s the difference between possums and opossums?

Opossums
Live on the North American continent
Look something like giant rats
Have white or gray fur and a long, bald tail

Possums
Live mainly in Australia
Are closely related to kangaroos
Look a little like a lemur

Are opossums marsupials?

Yes, opossums are the only marsupial indigenous to the American continent.

Do opossums really play dead?

Yes. When opossums are caught by surprise or threatened, they involuntarily go into a catatonic state. They fall on one side with their mouth open and almost stop breathing or functioning at all.

How long do opossums play dead?

Opossums go into a near-dead state when startled. This catatonic stupor can last for a few minutes or up to three hours, depending on the amount of shock it received.

What is a marsupial?

“Marsupial,” refers to the way an animal gives birth to young. Female marsupials have a pouch on their abdomen where the babies stay after birth. Inside the pouch, a  baby marsupial has access to milk and is safe from predators. “Marsupium,” literally means “pouch” in Latin.

What do opossums eat?

As omnivores, opossums can eat lots of different things.

Meat
Small rodents
Insects
Frogs
Small lizards
Worms
Birds
Other small prey

Plants
Vegetables
Berries
Nuts
Fruit
Bird seed

Opossums also will eat out of the garbage

We have never needed pest control in the past and we randomly called Fox. We couldn't be happier with Phil the technician that came to service our home. Phil was extremely knowledgeable, thorough and patient. He answered all of our questions and put us at ease. If all of Fox's technicians are like Phil then you'll be in good hands.

We've been using FOX for the last few years for seasonal pest maintenance. Every time we see some sort of pest activity outside our regular seasonal treatment, they come quick and take care of it. The workers are always kind and courteous and answer my questions and concerns. We've recommended this company to a number of family and friends who have also used FOX for treatment.
